How it works Slide 2 / 10

What are they really testing? 👀

Grammar

Passive, reported speech, wishes, comparatives, modals, gerunds and infinitives.

Vocabulary

Fixed phrases like in favour of, unlikely to, despite, call off.

Control

You must keep the same meaning and build the exact new structure.

Golden strategy

  • Read the first sentence carefully.
  • Spot the grammar or expression being tested.
  • Look at the keyword and imagine the new structure.
  • Count your words: between 2 and 5.
  • Check meaning, spelling and grammar.

Common traps Slide 5 / 10

Classic mistakes 😵

Trap 1

Changing the keyword

If the word is IDEA, you must use idea, not ideal or ideas.

Trap 2

Too many words

Cambridge counts carefully. Stay between 2 and 5 words.

Trap 3

Same grammar, wrong meaning

The sentence must mean the same thing, not just look similar.

Trap 4

Word-for-word translation

Transform the structure, don’t copy the original sentence blindly.

Quick check: before writing your final answer, ask yourself:

✅ Did I use the keyword exactly?

✅ Is the meaning the same?

✅ Is the grammar correct?

✅ Is it 2–5 words?
