Past Simple

Used for completed actions in the past.

Form: Subject + verb-ed (or irregular form)

✓ I walked to school yesterday.
✓ She ate breakfast at 8am.
Past Continuous

Used for actions in progress at a specific time in the past.

Form: Subject + was/were + verb-ing

✓ I was walking to school when it started raining.
✓ She was eating breakfast when I called.

🎯 When to Use Together

Past Continuous (longer action) + Past Simple (interruption)

I was watching TV when the phone rang.

The continuous action was in progress, and the simple action interrupted it.

⚡ Important Patterns

WHEN + Past Simple

Use "when" with the shorter action that interrupts.

✓ I was sleeping when the alarm rang.
✓ She was cooking when her friend arrived.
WHILE + Past Continuous

Use "while" with the longer action in progress.

✓ While I was studying, my brother was playing video games.
✓ While they were walking, it started to rain.
