01. Reason & Cause

Because, Since, As

These express why something happened. While often interchangeable, there are subtle usage differences:

Because:The most common. Focuses on the reason.
Since / As:Focuses on the result. Used when the reason is already known.

"As it was raining, we stayed in."
(The fact it's raining is obvious; staying in is the focus.)

02. Contrast & Concession

But, However, Although, Though

Managing conflicting information:

  • But: Connects two clauses (fanboys).
  • However: Starts a new sentence (adverb).
  • Although: Formal. Used with a full clause.
  • Though: Informal. Can go at the end of a sentence.

03. Addition

Also, Besides, Moreover, As well as

Moreover: Very formal. Adds information that supports a point.

Ex: Smoking is bad; moreover, it is expensive.

As well as: Followed by a noun or -ing.

Ex: She plays piano as well as singing.

Besides: Means "In addition to". Often used to add an extra reason.

Unlike although, these are prepositions. They are followed by:

  • 1. A Noun: "Despite the rain..."
